Two models are presented. The first proposes pain management as the key factor leading to satisfaction with childbirth. The second proposes mastery in childbirth as the key factor leading both to satisfaction and potentially to changes in personality traits such as self‐esteem and locus of control A review of the literature is presented which is supportive of the Mastery Model.
