Key result
Patients with STEMI had significantly more compromised left ventricular function compared to those with NSTEMI, including a lower mean ejection fraction (42.00% vs 50.12%, p=0.008).
Why the study?
LVEF has therapeutic and prognostic significance in myocardial infarction, prompting assessment of left ventricular function and comparison between STEMI and NSTEMI.
Does left ventricular function differ between patients with STEMI and NSTEMI?
Observational (n=50)
No
Does left ventricular function differ between patients with STEMI and NSTEMI?
STEMI patients have significantly more compromised left ventricular ejection fraction and dimensions compared to NSTEMI patients, highlighting the need for intensive management and potential invasive strategies.
Background: Myocardial Infarction is one of the leading cause of deaths & mortality worldwide. Echocardiography is the key investigation in cases of myocardial infarction and confirms the presence of regional wall motion abnormality, presence of left ventricular dysfunction and to assess ejection fraction, as left ventricular ejection fraction has both therapeutic and prognostic significance. Aims and Objective: To Assess Left Ventricular Function In Case of Acute Myocardial Infarction With Comparison Between Non ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction And ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction. Material and Method: Fifty consecutive patients of STEMI and NSTEMI admitted from the outdoor patient department / emergency ward /cardiology unit in MMIMSR Mullana, Ambala, were considered for the study. Study Design: A prospective, observational, clinical study. Study Duration: December 2017–July 2019. Result: A statistically significant difference between two groups was observed for ventricular dimensions (LVIDd and LVPWd), EF%/FS/CO,In this study smoking emerged as a major risk factor with preponderance of inferior wall MI in patients with no other cardiovascular risk factor. Conclusion: In this studySTEMIwas more common in younger age group with male preponderance. LVEF/CO/ left ventricular dimension were more compromised in STEMI than NSTEMI. Left ventricular dysfunction after acute myocardial infarction predicts long term mortality and reduced LVEF may prompt greater consideration of invasive treatment and to guide care strategy.

Pankaj Shah (2020) conducted an observational in Acute Myocardial Infarction (n=50). ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) vs. Non ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) was evaluated on Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF%) (p=0.008). Patients with STEMI had significantly more compromised left ventricular function compared to those with NSTEMI, including a lower mean ejection fraction (42.00% vs 50.12%, p=0.008).
