On page 9486, R. Langer, A. Jaklenec, and co-workers present a layer-by-layer (LbL) polysaccharide-encapsulated probiotic (layered in blue and green polysaccharides) being delivered to intestines lined with native microbes. The LbL-probiotics protect the encapsulated microbes from gastrointestinal tract insults, while simultaneously improving their adhesion and growth on the intestines. These advantages translate to the significantly enhanced survival of the LbL-probiotics in vivo as compared to unencapsulated probiotics.
