A patient with atrial fibrillation developed pulmonary vein occlusion with hemoptysis following catheter ablation for pulmonary vein isolation using a novel compliant cryoballoon.
Why the study?
PV stenosis is a serious complication that has occurred in a few cases following cryoballoon ablation for pulmonary vein isolation.
Case Report (n=1)
Highlights a severe complication of pulmonary vein occlusion with hemoptysis following the use of a novel compliant cryoballoon for atrial fibrillation ablation.
May signal pulmonary vein occlusion risk with novel cryoballoon; leaves open need for safety data in larger cohorts.
Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) for pulmonary vein (PV) isolation is a widely accepted treatment for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF)1 and has a favorable safety profile. However, PV stenosis, a serious complication,2 has occurred in a few cases. Here we report the case of a patient with AF who developed PV occlusion with hemoptysis following catheter ablation for PV isolation using a novel compliant cryoballoon.

Hayashi et al. (2025) conducted a case report in Atrial fibrillation (n=1). Catheter ablation using a novel compliant cryoballoon was evaluated on Pulmonary vein occlusion with hemoptysis. A patient with atrial fibrillation developed pulmonary vein occlusion with hemoptysis following catheter ablation for pulmonary vein isolation using a novel compliant cryoballoon.
