A phenomenological theory of the transition sequence in K 2 SeO 4 is constructed on the assumption that the phase of space group Pnam is prototypic. A widely applicable method is presented by which the thermodynamic potential function is determined. From this function, five possible phases nonconformal with one another are deduced which include the Pnam phase, the incommensurate phase and the commensurate Pna 2 1 phase. The criteria are found for the transitions between those three phases.
