The basic factors setting the performance limits of the time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer for 2.5-MeV neutrons as used for tokamak plasma diagnostics are analyzed. Special scintillator designs are proposed for best performance. Examples of diagnostic uses of the TOF spectrometer are also given.
