SUMMARYA new species of Gastroboletus, G. laricinus, is described. A detailed discussion of the differences between this species and Suillus grevillei and the ecological conditions under which both were observed at the type locality suggest that Gastroboletus is an independent genus and G. laricinus an independent taxon. The implications with regard to the evolution of Basidiomycetes are discussed, but our present data do not provide proof of an ancestral or derived position of Gastroboletus in relation to the genera of Boletaceae.
