Placement of a MitraClip in an 87-year-old woman resulted in severe intravascular hemolytic anemia that resolved after surgical mitral valve replacement.
Case Report (n=1)
MitraClip placement can rarely cause severe intravascular hemolytic anemia, which may require surgical mitral valve replacement for resolution.
Rare MitraClip-related hemolysis warrants post-procedure vigilance; leaves open incidence, predictors, and optimal management in broader populations.
An 87-year-old woman with a history of trastuzumab-induced left ventricular dysfunction underwent the MitraClip (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, California) procedure for myxomatous mitral regurgitation. She presented a month later with severe intravascular hemolytic anemia, attributed to the MitraClip. She underwent surgical mitral valve replacement and had resolution of hemolysis. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.)
