Experimental study demonstrates successful needle biopsy of skeletal muscle in dogs, indicating its viability for repeated sampling in long-term stress experiments.
SUMMARY A technique for needle biopsy of skeletal muscle in dogs was utilized in an experiment on the effects of ration on induced fatigue in a group of 15 military German Shepherd Dogs. Specimens of resting muscle were processed both for light and electron microscopy. The mass of harvested muscle measured approximately 10 by 2 by 2 mm. and was adequate for morphologic and histochemical assays. The technique made possible repeated biopsies of animals under long-range experiments designed for study of muscle subjected to physical, nutritional, environmental, or other stresses.
