Ultrasonography was performed on 152 patients with suspected renalmasses. Caseswerediagnosedasnormal, simplecyst, multicystic, hydronephrosis, complex mass or solid mass. A diagnostic accuracy of 90% was obtained in 121 confirmed cases. No solid tumors were falsely diagnosed as simple cysts. Of 51 proven cysts, ultrasonography correctly diagnosed 88% while nephrotomography revealed a definite thin wall in 51%. Ultrasonogra phy may be used to select patients for nephrotomography, cyst aspiration, or arteriography, and may thus eliminate the need for arteriography in a higher percentage of renal cysts than is currently achieved by nephrotomography alone.
