SUMMARYMethods of determining the identity of Bipolare mayáis races O and T were compared. Races O and T of B. maydis were differentiated within 5 da on Difco malt agar and by their differential hydrolysis of amino acid derivatives. The tests were applied to more than 30 isolates of each race from wide geographical areas. Sclerotia were produced only by race T, which hydrolyzed some amino acid substrates more rapidly and to a greater degree than did race O.
