The reactions of various p-substituted benzoyl cyanides with trivalent phosphorus compounds have been studied. They react with triethyl phosphite to form 2 : 1 adducts which, upon being heated in xylene, decomposed into the corresponding dicyanostilbene oxide and triethyl phosphate. The reaction with tri-n-butylphosphine, on the other hand, gives cis-dicyanostilbene derivatives. These reactions can be explained by a mechanism through similar intermediates.
