During axial compression of gel drawn ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, kink bands are formed at 90° and 75–80° to the draw axis. With increasing compressive strain, the generation of new kink bands and thickening of those already present occur simultaneously; the kink band angles are independent of strain. (110)⟨001⟩ slip is suggested to play the dominant role in the formation of the 75° kink bands, (100)⟨001⟩ slip for the 90° kink bands.
