Defects in crystals are characterized according to the type of coupling with the host. The dynamics of defects interacting with soft phonons is discussed. At a single defect, condensation of a local mode may lead to slow defect dynamics. For interacting defects, condensation of an impurity band may give rise to a phase transition in the impurity system. The experimental situation in various systems is briefly reviewed.
