Directional Breakdown in Crystals(London: Heywood), p. 61.a-bonding in (CuCl,)" Paramagnetic resonance methods have been used to investigate the electron distribution in (CUc1,)4-complexes present in mixed crystals of Cu : CdC1, with Cu: Cdw 1 : 200.Extensive hyperfine structures from the C1 nuclei are found which indicate that there are surprisingly strong Cu-C1 a-bonds.An example is shown in the Figure, where the Cu hyperfine structure is negligible and the C1 structure is particularly well resolved.structure with H at 45' to x in the xy plane. The structure is from 4 equivalent cl nuclei, with B(Cu) =O.The spacing between adjacent lines is 14 gauss.
