This review is concerned with the morphegenetic interactions which occur during the development of the so-called epithelio-mesenchymal organs. The nature of the mesenchymal requirement for epithelial growth and morphogenesis is presented. The curren status of cell-cell communication which occurs during morphogenetic interactions, as well as the role of intracellular and extracelluar components in morphogenesis, are considered. Particular attention is given to a detailed analysis of the possible role that cell proliferation may play in determining morphogenetic patterns, an aspect that has hitherto received little consideration. Finally, a model for morphogenesis is proposed which endeavors to account for the regulatory roles previously assigned to the intracellular and extracellular components of epithelio-mesenchymal organs, and which includes a role for cell proliferation in this developmental process.
