The upper-air circulation over the southern part of South America is determined with use of pilot-balloon observations and cyclone tracks. The resulting flow patterns are compared with those to be expected in a westerly current crossing a large mountain barrier, and they are found to be in agreement. Comparison with cyclone tracks of the United States permits qualitative evaluation of the order of magnitude of the mountain effect to that of the local solenoid field at east coasts.
