A theory is given for the behaviour of contact angles, as a function of the concentration of surface active substances, observed in wetting and de‐wetting experiments of metal and mineral surfaces. It is shown, that the change of the contact angle with solute concentration can be related quantitatively to the adsorption densities at the three interfaces, which meet at the line of contact. Some published results are discussed in terms of the theory developed.
