The number of particles in an emulsion latex has been determined using standard light scattering apparatus. The values determined are shown to agree closely with those observed using electron microscopy either by direct count methods or by measurement of the dimensions of the particles. For the emulsion polymerization of styrene these self consistent measurements lead to a value of about 60 1. mole−1 sec.−1 for the propagation rate constant.
