Narrative review reveals rapid technological transformation and enrollment growth in global higher education, highlighting a shift toward hybrid and personalized learning environments.
In the past 25 years, higher education has changed from an institution-focused model to a dynamic, technology-driven, and globally connected one. This article examines higher education from 2000 to 2025, concentrating on digitisation, globalisation, student mobility, online learning platforms, and institutional innovation. The study shows how artificial intelligence, MOOCs, and adaptive learning systems have changed pedagogy, accessibility, and certification. Coursera's 2012 launch, edX's post-2013 expansion, and micro-credentials have altered degree frameworks, enabling lifelong learning and workforce improvement. The report discusses geopolitical shifts like China's 2015 “Double First-Class” program and India's NEP 2020, which seek to boost global academic competitiveness. The 2020–2022 COVID-19 epidemic accelerated digital adoption, forcing Stanford and the University of London to switch to remote instruction, changing faculty training and student engagement. Germany's dual-degree programs, South Korea's AI-integrated curriculum, and the US' competency-based education models demonstrate regional adaptations to global influences. OECD figures show a 40% increase in global tertiary enrolment since 2000, raising concerns about equity, affordability, and degree devaluation in an oversaturated market. Based on actual realities, policy documents, and academic literature, this research claims that higher education today has adaptive, individualised, and inclusive learning environments rather than physical campuses. Hybrid methods that combine human-centered education with algorithmic personalisation will foster resilience, innovation, and social mobility.
