Prospects of breeding for resistance to Fusarium wilt disease were evaluated hy testing the aggressiveness and virulence of 25 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp lini towards a number of different sources of resistance in flax and linseed. Isolates differed strongly in aggressiveness, as did the host in resistance. Significant interaction variance was observed between host genotypes and pathogen isolates, but its magnitude was small compared with that of the main effects, resistance of the cultivars and aggressiveness of the isolates. The interactions, possibly indicating race specificity, were caused mainly by a group of isolates with low aggressiveness originating from the American continent. There was no evidence for clearly identifiable races and very little for the existence of race-specific effects.
