Heterozygous carriers of Glanzmann's thrombasthenia may experience early excessive postoperative bleeding when undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
May indicate bleeding risk in heterozygous Glanzmann's carriers after CPB; leaves open need for prospective perioperative studies.
In Brief Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia is a congenital hemorrhagic disorder transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait and characterized by altered production and/or assembly of the platelet membrane glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor. We describe the perioperative management of a heterozygous carrier of Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia submitted to cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass and the case was complicated by early excessive postoperative bleeding. IMPLICATIONS: We describe the perioperative management of a patient who was a heterozygous carrier of Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia and who submitted to cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. The case was complicated by early, excessive postoperative bleeding.
