Apolipoprotein (apo) D is a member of the lipocalin superfamily of proteins that transports small hydrophobic ligands. Cholesterol, steroid hormones and heme-related compounds have been proposed as candidate physiological ligands of apoD. On the basis of observations of its structure and the tissue distribution of its gene expression, we propose that apoD may be a multi-ligand, multi-function protein.
