Data collected from a normally operating, interconnected power system are used to estimate frequency responses for transfer functions occurring in a multivariate block-diagram representation of the turbo-alternator. Results indicate that the mathematical representation of the synchronous machine may be significantly simplified in control problems involving small-scale disturbances. Although additional investigation is required to ascertain the effects of nonlinearity and to improve the identification technique, the approach appears promising as an aid to better integration of digital-computer control in power systems.
