The marking of wild mammals to permit the recognition of individuals under field conditions has not received the attention that its potential value would seem to warrant. Field identification of marked individuals has many advantages, chiefly in studies of movements, as migrating and cruising radii can be determined most effectively and other ecological problems can be solved. Courtship, mating, family relationships, populations, and behavior patterns of individuals are some subjects upon which we may gain more light by devising reliable means of recognizing individuals.
