We show that when used as diffractive optical elements, FLC displays are inherently independent of polarisation and the overall diffractive effect of the device is identical to an array of imperfect {0, π} phase modulators. This realization opens the path for FLC diffraction to be used in a much wider range of optical systems. In this paper we present detailed experimental results of a polarisation independent single-mode fibre switch for reconfigurable distribution of an optical signal to one of an array of output fibres.
