The Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 emphasizes the need to consider costs when promulgating regulations. In response to the concerns about the costs of technological requirements, research was undertaken to develop cost data associated with 99 unit processes for treating drinking water. These estimates were used as a basis for regression analysis estimates calculated on equations that were derived for operations and maintenance costs and capital costs annualized at 8 percent over a 20‐year amortization period. The equations and some typical applications are presented.
