This paper presents what are thought to be the first truly in situ electron diffraction results obtained from semitransparent alkali antimonide photocathodes during processing. A scanning electron diffraction system specially constructed for the purpose (Beck and Robbie 1972) has been used to record the diffraction patterns of caesium antimonide photocathodes directly during growth, and evidence has been found to suggest that high photosensitivity may be related to an ordered crystal structure. Antimony thin films have also been studied and the nature of texture patterns found in films of polycrystalline material has been determined.
