A study is made of the variation in the shape of the direct absorption edge in germanium with doping level. Increasing the impurity density leads to a broadening and disappearance (at a concentration of about 1016 cm−3) of the direct exciton maximum as well as affecting the shape of the absorption spectrum near the edge.
