Modern movement analysis has significantly altered the surgical treatment of cerebral palsy. By providing an objective measurement of pre- and postoperative kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography, treatments can be devised and outcomes can be assessed. This article reviews the rationale for gait analysis, its component parts, and its utility in the development of modern surgical concepts, such as single stage surgery of the lower extremities, rectus to hamstring transfers, treatment of ankle equinus, and upper extremity tendon transfers. It's use as a clinical tool is also emphasized. MRDD Research Reviews 3:212-219, 1997.
