This review is devoted to one of the urgent issues in medicine—the problem of metabolic syndrome (MS) in elderly people. Special attention is paid to its higher frequency of occurrence in aged people. The updated records on pathogenesis of the basic MS components potentiating the development of cardiac diseases and pancreatic diabetes of the second type are given. It is pointed out that the hormonal changes arising with age create conditions for development of visceral obesity, insulin resistance, dislipidemy, and subclinical inflammation, i.e., those pathological changes that make the MS basis. Measures to prevent the cardiovascular complications consisting in changes in the way of life for people suffering MS are considered.
