Intraluminal pressures and pH were analyzed in 285 patients with hiatus hernia and 10 healthy subjects to evaluate factors responsible for gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Observational (n=295)
The study describes intraluminal pressure and pH findings in hiatus hernia patients and introduces equipment for constant abdominal compression to demonstrate reflux.
Pressure-pH data in hiatus hernia may clarify reflux factors; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Recording of intraluminal pressures and pH within the oesophagus and the stomach during different peritoneopleural pressure differences were traced in 10 healthy subjects and 285 patients with symptoms and/or signs of hiatus hernia. The material fell into largely 3 groups according to the degree of herniation. In 40 of the patients operated upon for hiatus hernia recordings were available pre- and postoperative. The data obtained and factors responsible for reflux are analysed. An equipment for maintaining a constant abdominal compression is described as well as its application in the demonstration of hiatus hernia and gastro-oesophageal reflux.

S. Sandmark (1963) conducted an observational in Hiatus hernia and gastro-oesophageal reflux (n=295). Hiatus hernia vs. Healthy subjects was evaluated on Intraluminal pressures and pH within the oesophagus and the stomach. Intraluminal pressures and pH were analyzed in 285 patients with hiatus hernia and 10 healthy subjects to evaluate factors responsible for gastro-oesophageal reflux.
