In the Gaussian approximation, the propagation between any two planes may be represented as the product of a lower triangular matrix times an upper triangular matrix. The matrices themselves, as well as their elements, have an immediate physical meaning. This representation contains the principal plane representation and the focal plane representation as particular cases.
