The transition from the dynamic to the static distorted structure (point symmetry Oh and C2v, respectively) could be detected for the first time in structural investigations on the TeBr ⊖ ion. In the title compound, which is characterized by a strongly polarizing cation, the static distorted structure could be stabilized by reduced symmetry of the crystal field. This means that the privileged position assigned to the AX6E system according to Gillespie's VEPA theory is also refuted.
