We have observed by quantum beat spectroscopy the Stark effect in a low electric field of highly excited Na n D states ( n = 10, 11, 12). The polarizabilities are found to be 10 6 to 10 7 time larger than those of atoms in ground or low lying excited states and are in good agreement with theoretical values calculated from a hydrogenic model.
