Picosecond time-resolved degenerate four-wave mixing has been performed in bulk crystals of CdSe. A strong nonlinear resonance is found 5 meV below the free-exciton energy and is ascribed to the induced exciton-biexciton transition. The phase coherence time of the transition is 20 ps at low excitation intensity and temperature, and decreases with increasing values of these parameters. For pump intensities above ≃ 1 μJ/cm 2 , spatial and temporal instabilities are observed.
