Assessment of susceptibility of spring wheat cultivars and breeding lines to Septoria nodorum was studied using detached seedling leaves mounted on benzimidazole agar. The results showed that all Finnish cultivars were fairly susceptible. The most resistant cultivars/lines were CI 12463 and Norröna. The most susceptible and resistant cultivars were detected easily by this technique. The Spearman's rank correlation (0.75) between the seedling test and field assessment was fairly high. The results are discussed in relation to selection strategies in breeding for wheats resistant to S. nodorum.
