The rate of heat transfer by forced convection from rotating and oscillating spheroids of ice has been investigated and it is shown that these factors are unlikely to influence the rate of heat transfer from hailstones. Turbulence, however, does affect the rate of heat transfer and it is suggested that some of the transitions from clear to opaque ice observed in hailstones could be caused by the influence of the turbulent wake of one hailstone on another. The effect of prolonged melting on shape is also discussed.
