Dicarbonyl compounds, e. g. dialdehydes and γ–diketones, formed during the exposure of nylon 6. 6 fabrics and of various polyamide model compounds in a Fade–Ometer, can be regarded as intermediates in the yellowing of photodegraded polyamides. They react easily with substances containing free amino groups to form pyrroles, which are primarily responsible for the yellowing. The mechanism of formation of the dicarbonyl compounds during photodegradation is discussed. The sensitivity of a photodegraded nylon 6. 6 fabric to yellowing on storage, as well as in various treatments, has been studied.
