The self-focusing of femtosecond optical pulses in dielectric solids is studied under the influence of the combined effects of diffraction, Kerr nonlinearity, normal group velocity dispersion, and self-induced multiphoton ionization. The numerical simulations show a significant pulse shortening with a compression factor of 5.5 and self-channeling of the beam when the critical power is exceeded.
