A lot of thermotropic liquid crystalline salts, in which the central rigid part is constituted of an heteroaromatic polarisable cation (pyrylium, 1, 2 - dithiolium), was synthesized. The influence on mesomorphic behaviour of different parameters, (e.g. the number, the position, the length of the flexible chains and the nature of the anion), has been studied. The most interesting result is, starting from a lamellar phase (SA), a columnar one (Dho) is obtained by increasing the number of the long alkoxy substituents grafted on to the rigid part of the cationic entity.
