Sera from 51 persons were analyzed with an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay for antibody levels against four different isolates of Bacteroides intermedius. Interestingly, individual sera showed very different antibody titers against the four bacterial strains. The phenomenon was observed with both IgG and IgA. but was more pronounced in the case of the IgA response. The results reveal a previously underestimated antigenic heterogeneity of B. intermedius, which clearly further limits the interpretation of studies analyzing the B. intermedius specific antibody response in periodontal disease.
