Taxonomic revision reveals twelve valid species in the moth genus Rigema, including four new species, highlighting previously unrecognized Lepidopteran diversity across Africa.
In this paper, the species of the genus Rigema Walker, 1855 are revised based on morphological assessments. The genus comprises 12 valid species, four of which are described as new to science: R. amharica sp. n., R. faber sp. n., R. morettoi sp. n., R. witti sp. n. A new subspecies, R. orientalis strandi ssp. n. is described for the West African populations of the species. Rigema amphiaraus (Kiriakoff, 1955), comb. n. is transferred to Rigema from the genus Antheua Walker, 1855. Lectotypes are designated for Rigema vittata Walker, 1855, Rigema karschi Strand, 1912, and Rigema ornata Walker, 1865. Adults and genitalia of all taxa are figured through their primary types and additional specimens demonstrating intraspecific variability. The currently known distribution of all taxa is illustrated on dot maps.
