Lipid-lowering agents, particularly statins and fibrates, are associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease in a nationwide cohort.
Lipid-lowering agents, particularly statins, have been investigated for their potential neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD).However, their association with PD risk remains unclear. This study evaluates the relationship between lipid-lowering medication use and PD incidence using a nationwide retrospective cohort. Two analytical approaches were applied: (1) an inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) matched cohort study and (2) a time-varying analysis to assess the dynamic impact of lipid-lowering agents over time.Patients prescribed lipid-lowering agents were categorized into exposure and non-exposure groups, with propensity score weighting applied to balance baseline characteristics.Cox proportional hazard models estimated the hazard ratios (HR) for PD incidence, and subgroup analyses were conducted based on specific lipid-lowering agents. The IPTW-matched analysis found that lipid-lowering medication use was associated with a significantly lower risk of PD (HR = 0.376, 95% CI: 0.372-0.379,p < 0.0001).Subgroup analyses showed that statins (HR = 0.383) and fibrates (HR = 0.345) demonstrated the greatest risk reduction.Time-varying analysis further supported these findings. These results suggest that lipid-lowering agents may have a protective effect against PD, warranting further research to confirm these associations and underlying mechanisms.

Min et al. (2025) conducted a cohort in Parkinson's disease (PD). Lipid-lowering agents vs. non-exposure group was evaluated on Parkinson's disease incidence (HR 0.376, 95% CI 0.372-0.379, p=< 0.0001). Lipid-lowering medication use was associated with a significantly lower risk of Parkinson's disease incidence (HR 0.376; 95% CI 0.372-0.379; p < 0.0001).
