The fact that 180^∘{} domain formation in ferroelectric crystals is unaffected by the presence of shorted, vapor-deposited electrodes is shown to be the consequence of a surface layer with properties which differ from the bulk. The properties of this layer are consistent with some surface layers proposed to explain anomalous switching effects in thin ferroelectric crystals.
