In this paper, we associate an anisotropic surface energy with a nematic liquid crystal-isotropic fluid interface. Using a variational principle, equations representing the balance of traction and couple at the interface and the interfacial edge conditions are obtained. Finally, two simple experimental situations are investigated, in which a solid boundary and an interface act as competing influences upon the orientation of the liquid crystal.
