The K‐absorption edge of copper in the complexes Cu(LH)2SO4 · 4 H2O, Cu(LH)SO4 · 4 H2O, and Cu(phen) (xant)2 is investigated using a Cauchois‐type bent crystal X‐ray spectrograph. The peaks A, B, and C observed in the edges are explained on the basis of molecular orbital theory. Peak positions are correlated with partial charge on the central metal ion. It is observed that the peak A shifts to the low‐energy side while the peaks B and C shift to the high‐energy side as the partial charge on an absorbing ion in the complex increases.
