The concept of the maximum likelihood estimator is integrated with the imaging formalism of diffraction tomography. The result is a signal processing algorithm which yields an image of the log likelihood function for the existence and position of a predetermined target. The approach is applied to cross-borehole radar data in order to detect and locate a tunnel.
