The aims of this paper were the following: the comparison of responses ofIps typographus, Dendroctonus micans, andHylurgops glabratusto objects obtained from resistent and susceptible trees of Norway spruce,Picea excelsa, the determination of tends in olfactory responses of the beetles by help of numerous objects, and also the role of test condition. In the laboratory studies using an olfactometerIps typographusshowed very diversity response to test substances. For example, alpha‐pinene and beta‐pinene, being the main components of spruce oleoresin, were repellents at all tested quantities. But terpene alcohols, borneol and alpha‐terpineol were always attractants for the beetles.D. micanswas very strong attracted by spruce oleoresin, volatile oil and all the tested terpenoids including citrale. On the contrary,H. glabratusnegatively responded to oleoresin, volatile oil and terpenoids. In the fieldIps typographusdid'nt show attraction to oleoresin, separate terpenoids and vinegar. Billets sprayed with vinegar or alpha‐terpineol attracted the beetles at the same rate as the control ones. Hence, the field tests did not demonstrate any response of bark beetles to the objects that served as attractants in the laboratory tests. The possible causes of the differences between laboratory and field results are discussed.
