Ratios of anions (e.g., Cl– to SO4−2) in environmental waters cannot be used to predict pitting or crevice corrosion inhibition. Bacteria and fungi can reduce or assimilate corrosion inhibiting anions, altering anion chemistry and concentration. Microbially mediated chemical alterations of anions have not been incorporated into models used for Yucca Mountain nuclear waste disposal corrosion predictions.
